News april 2007:
Sample and demonstration plots
In order to test our varieties and to introduce them to our clients, C. Meijer B.V. has laid out a number of sample and demonstration plots.
Micro-trials have been laid out in different climatic areas. On these plots new varieties from the cultivation company are compared with existing varieties. Sample plots are laid to test the agricultural aspects.
Demonstration plots are used to introduce customers to our varieties under the local conditions. These plots are therefore located in the region where the customer is established. These plots are often used to collect technical data on the varieties.
The plots are often located at quite a long travel distance, and the planting is done by hand. It therefore takes a lot of time and is rather labour-intensive. Employees from all departments are involved in laying out these plots.
It is always a pleasure to work together in the field. Especially when the weather is nice.
The picture at the bottom of this article depicts a demonstration plot being planted in Northern France. It is an area in which many potatoes are grown for the processing industry. Therefore mainly French fries and potato crisp varieties are planted in this demonstration plot. In France the structure of the soil is not optimal either. The structure of the demonstration plot is reasonable. According to the grower this was his least beautiful parcel.
