Visiting a ship

Every year we ship many potatoes around the whole world in conditioned containers. We ourselves (the logistic department of C. Meijer B.V.) never had a chance to visit a containership. This has changed. CMA CGM offered us the chance to take a look on board a large containership moored in the port of Rotterdam.

This is the team that visited the ship.

The picture was taken by our colleague Corry Mol.

Before we went to the Maasvlakte we had a tour of the container company offices. In the afternoon we went to the place where the containerships are loaded. A dock is about 4 km long and there are rows of containerships.

When you are driving up you can see the ships lying there, but only if you are driving on the dock do you get a good picture of them. We got to visit CMA CGM Verlaine. This is a ship that can load approximately 3.250 40ft of containers. A container of 40ft can contain an approximate average of 25 tons of potatoes. The ship is 300 metres in length, 40 metres wide and the bridge is an ample 60 metres high. The ship has an engine capacity of 9.300 hp. A remarkable fact is that the entire ship is operated with a “joy stick”.

A picture taken from the bridge shows the containers that have been loaded on the ship.

The ship has a crew of 25 men of 2 nationalities. Some comfort is also provided. On board there is a swimming pool, sauna and fitness centre. It is even possible to sail along as a passenger for € 100, - a day.

Visiting the ship was impressive and educational as well now we’ve had the chance to take a close look at what it takes to ship a container.
