News June 2007:

News from our purchase department

Harvest 2007 started with a warm dry period during planting. The season started badly because of the bad soil structure, the many clods and time of planting. The rain in May did a world of good and most potato plants are in good shape. The roughing is in full swing and with that we can lay the foundation for next year's cultivation.

As can be seen on the photograph, the potato-roughing machine is becoming an essential tool on more and more farms.

Because of the trend of fewer farmers with more acreage and larger parcels of land, the image of the traditional walking through the seed potato fields with the bag on his back is disappearing.

Of course the expertise of the seed grower remains of crucial importance. He or she is preferably aided by weather conditions, so that the diseased plants are more easily recognisable. Not too much wind, an overcast sky and, for him or her personally, a pleasant temperature; and always with the ultimate goal of producing healthy planting material for potato cultivation for consumption.

The close of the season is not far off.  The final pool prices have been examined by a delegation of our seed growers, the so-called confidentiality committee. Once they have given their approval, the pool prices will be settled definitively. During the next end of season meeting for our seed growers, an explanation will be given about last season, and the prices realised.
