News march 2007:
The breeding station is prepared for the new season

The 2007/2008 season is just around the corner. Just like each season, it’s an exciting time waiting to see which varieties turn out to be successful.

After weeks of preparation the Rilland team is ready for the field season. Varieties produced from previous years are starting to pre-sprout in our plastic foil greenhouse. The trial fields have been prepared so the plants can be planted mechanically, with no delays for the automatic planting machine (photo)

The seedlings have been selected; the first 26,000 of the in total 60,000 new candidate varieties for the first year of field trails for 2008 are growing in the greenhouse. From each plant, 1 tuber will ultimately be saved for planting out in the full ground next year (photo).

The greenhouse with the crossed varieties has also been planted so that combinations can be made for the varieties planned for introduction from 2015. Our four babies should have grown up by then – a development we will follow with keen interest.

Let the spring begin!
