C. Meijer B.V. employees cycle the Ride for the Roses
Lance Armstrong has not only won the Tour de France seven times, but he has also conquered his personal battle against cancer. In 1997 this resulted in Armstrong starting to collect money for cancer research, focused on better chances of recovery. The concrete objectives of the Ride for the Roses are: bringing in funds for the benefit of KWF Combat Cancer, holding the disease of cancer up for debate, and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
The Ride is not a cycle event for cash prizes, but a cycle tour with - for every participant - a red rose at the finish line. A rose that symbolises values in life other than money, such as compassion. Everyone can participate in the Ride for the Roses. There are various options: a ´Cycle Tour´ of over 100 kilometres, and two tour rides of 50 and 25 kilometres.
C. Meijer B.V. supports the objectives of the Ride for the Roses with sporty enthusiasm. Apart from that, the employees have their special reasons as well. Since everyone knows someone in his or her family or among his or her friends who is or was confronted with cancer. The little son of one of our colleagues has had a brain tumour. He and his family battled for years with chemotherapies, a serious operation and radiotherapy. He has conquered the disease and currently leads a happy life. As a colleague you are closely involved in that, and this provides you with extra motivation to join in for the good cause. Apart from that, it is a friendly cycling trip with colleagues, as well as an enormous event.

On Sunday 31st of August the event took place with the start and finish in Goes. A string of cyclists drove from Goes along Noord-Beveland, Schouwen-Duiveland and back to Goes. 14,000 cyclists, of whom 7,500 drove the 100 km route. With many prominent figures such as Michael Boogerd, Gerrit Solleveld and Leontien Zijlaard – v. Moorsel.

Seven colleagues and five guests participated in the 100 km ride. Dressed in an outfit in the colours and with the logo of C. Meijer B.V. they successfully completed the ride. It was a fantastic event with beautiful weather, many enthusiastic spectators, perfect organisation, and luckily very few pile-ups. The whole event collected 1.3 million Euros for the KWF Combat Cancer. Upon arrival every participant was presented with a red rose.
